It was about 8:30pm out in Maidstone, On. The sun was still setting so it was still pretty bright outside.
There were several flocks of gulls and geese and ducks flying west over our house. We were watching the birds when I saw a large light in the sky. I pointed to it and asked my husband, “What is that?”
Originally we thought it might be the first star of the night but it was still so bright out so it didn’t make any sense.
“Hey maybe it will come down here if it sees us” I joked as we waved at it.
Still, I went inside the house to grab the binoculars and take a closer look and told him to keep an eye on it.
When I returned it was still in the same spot. We live a farms field away from the 401 and it seemed to have set itself right above it, but up very very high in the air. It hovered higher than a plane could fly.
We could tell it was stationary because there were small wispy clouds moving over it. It wasn’t twinkling like a star would either, so my husband’s next thought was a planet. He pulled out his iPod and checked his star gazer app but there were no planets out this early, none in that position of the sky anyways.
When I looked at it through the binoculars it was orb shaped. I could not really tell if the constant bright light it gave off was a reflection of the sun or it’s own power source, though I did see prism like lights shining from it as well that seemed to be shooting out around its sides. At other times the lights looked pink and purplish.
We took turns examining it through the binoculars, clearly perplexed.
Satellites do not sit still like that, stars do not look like that.
“What is that?” Was all I could really say about it.
And then poof, it was gone.
We didn’t actually see it leave the sky, but one second it was there and then the next it was gone.
Husband says it had to have been a couple hundred feet in diameter. We are still debating wether or not it was indeed in our atmosphere. He seems to think it was though I am not so sure. If it wasn’t, could it have been larger than that?
Still very peculiar, something I’ve never seen before. Wanted to make sure I got it down here while still fresh in my mind.
